Atonement - Poster [1] (click to enlarge)Atonement, a film adaptation of the brilliant novel by Ian McEwan, is a romantic drama set in the years preceding and during World War II. The lives of Cecilia Tallis and her lover, Robbie Turner, are irrevocably altered by the simple words of her younger sister, Briony Tallis. Atonement explores the circumstances leading up to, and resulting from, this life-changing event, and brings you on an emotional journey that ends with a finale that will leave you asking, ‘What If?’

Movie Review - Juno

2 March, 2008 by Matthew · 2 Comments

Juno (click to enlarge)Juno tells a tale of a teenage girl who unexpectedly finds herself pregnant. She is then faced with a stark decision for the child: abortion or adoption. It is a stylish comedy starring the fresh-faced Ellen Page, who brings such verve to the main character that few other teenage actresses can.

The Kite Runner (click to enlarge)The Kite Runner is a movie adaptation of the 2003 best-selling novel by Afghan-American writer Khaled Hosseini. It tells the story of two childhood friends, living in the Afghan capital, Kabul, who share much of their lives together, including a love for kite-flying. But a single repulsive experience causes their lives to diverge. A sense of guilt lingers within one of them, who, many years later, seeks to atone for his actions.

Movie Review - The Warlords

18 December, 2007 by Matthew · 2 Comments

The Warlords (click to enlarge)The Warlords is an epic movie set during China’s imperial past. Therefore, you can expect many battle scenes, intense fight sequences, grand sweeping shots of the battlefield, and references to China’s grand history. What sets this movie apart from other similar tales such as Hero and Curse of the Golden Flower is the director’s focus on the characterizations of the 3 main characters, the blood brothers.

Movie Review - Requiem For A Dream

12 December, 2007 by Matthew · No Comments

Requiem For A Dream (click to enlarge)I have been yearning to catch Requiem For A Dream ever since I saw director Darren Aronofsky’s other cinematic masterpiece, The Fountain (read my review of that epic here). I was hugely impressed with The Fountain and sought to watch Aronofsky’s previous films, expecting them to be of a similarly high standard. Unbelievably, Requiem for A Dream exceeded even these lofty expectations and left me emotionally gripped upon its conclusion.

Movie Review - Marie Antoinette

27 July, 2007 by Matthew · No Comments

Marie Antoinette (click to enlarge)Sofia Coppola’s retelling of the story of the ill-fated Marie Antoinette did not leave a lasting impression. A lack of gravity was compounded by the addition of contemporary culture which did the film no favours.

Movie Review - Deja Vu

19 July, 2007 by Matthew · No Comments

Deja Vu (click to enlarge)I have to admit, I am a huge Denzel Washington fan, and I’m always gripped by the movies he stars in. He brings a gravity to his films, they are usually intense, dramatic, and powerful, and in that respect, Deja Vu does not disappoint.

Movie Review - Transformers

6 July, 2007 by Matthew · No Comments

Transformers (click to enlarge)Transformers! Ah, the nostalgic robot fantasy of our childhood where vehicles morph into fighting robots. The endless battles between the Autobots and the Decepticons. The classic duels between Optimus Prime and Megatron. Now, the series is revived as a movie under the director-ship of Michael Bay.

Movie Review - The Fountain

30 June, 2007 by Matthew · No Comments

The Fountain (click to enlarge)The Fountain is an epic cinematic experience, a masterpiece that spans across a thousand years, incorporates 3 separate but associated narratives, and forces us to ponder upon the issues of love, hope, despair, spirituality and mortality. It would be wrong to classify it simply as a love story, for it delves much deeper than that. It is an intelligent, deep, hard film. It is an arthouse piece, one that compels us to think, to question, to discuss, and therein lies its beauty.
