Greatest Sportmanship Gesture Ever?

13 July, 2008 by Matthew · No Comments

In a women’s softball college game in the USA, 2 teams fighting for the lead in their regional league (which would qualify the team for a place in the national championships) met in a crucial game.

What happened during that game might well qualify as one of the greatest sportmanship (or should that be sportswomanship?) gestures of all time.

Brave Lions fall to 2-0 defeat to Saudis

7 February, 2008 by Matthew · No Comments

Playing in the 3rd round of the Asian Qualifiers for the World Cup 2010 in South Africa, our Singapore Lions put on a tenacious display of football in the Arabian plains, narrowly succumbing to the mighty Saudis by two goals of pure quality. The result was a fair one in the end, but Singapore certainly showed their rapid improvement under the tutelage of Raddy Avramovic, with our defense in particular stifling the Saudis for much of the match.

1 Minute of Applause - In Tribute

24 September, 2007 by Matthew · No Comments

This past Saturday, Newcastle United Football Club observed a minute’s applause in tribute to Jordan Thompson, a 15-year-old star in the Academy, who sadly passed away after a long fight with cancer.

This represents a welcome departure from the traditional minute’s silence that has been observed globally in memory of those who have left us.

Click through to discover why I think a minute’s applause should replace the traditional minute’s silence, and view a video of the minute’s applause, taken by a Newcastle supporter from the terraces

13 September, 2007 by Matthew · 3 Comments

What ecstasy! What joy! What sorrow! What sadness! Surely, in terms of its sheer, unadulterated intensity and excitement, the heights and depths of emotions fans experience, football is unrivaled.

Football is unpredictable, and therein lies its beauty and thrill. The improbable triumph of the underdog never ceases to fascinate.
